How to use this grind size chart
- Tap your brew method. Eleven of them, from Turkish and espresso at the fine end to French press and cold brew at the coarse end. The card updates the moment you pick.
- Read the grind and the microns. You get the grind name (Fine, Medium, Coarse…), the D50 micron range serious recipes use, and — because most of us don't own a laser particle sizer — an everyday texture to match by feel, like table salt or coarse sand.

Why this grind size chart is different
Search "coffee grind size chart" and you'll get the same thing over and over: a pretty poster. A ring of grind photos you can look at but can't use. Here's what this one does that a picture can't:
- It's interactive, not a JPEG. Tap a method and get that method's grind, microns, texture, the reason behind it, and a fix — instead of squinting at a caption in a poster.
- It speaks microns. "Medium grind" means nothing between two grinders; 700 µm is 700 µm on any of them. This chart aggregates published micron ranges (notabarista, Kruve, the SCA cupping protocol) into one scale, so a recipe actually transfers.
- It matches by feel and by eye. You don't own a particle analyzer, so every method maps to a kitchen texture — powdered sugar, table salt, sea salt — plus a to-scale swatch of how the grounds should look.
- It's honest about ranges. These are D50 starting points, not laws. The chart says so, and tells you which direction to move when the cup tells you you're off.
- It's yours to keep and share. A printable PDF, a share-a-setting link, and a free embed for your own coffee blog — none of which a static chart image can do.
How grind size actually works
Grind size controls one thing above all: how fast water pulls flavor out of the coffee. Smaller particles have far more surface area per gram, so they extract faster; bigger particles extract slowly. Match the grind to how long — and how forcefully — water meets the coffee, and you land in the sweet spot. Miss it and you get the two classic faults:
Too FINE -> water extracts too much -> bitter, dry, muddy, slow to drain
Too COARSE -> water extracts too little -> sour, weak, thin, drains too fast
Contact time drives the grind:
short + high pressure (espresso) -> FINE (~180-380 um)
medium gravity brew (pour over) -> MEDIUM (~400-950 um)
long immersion (cold brew) -> EXTRA COARSE (~900-1500 um) A micron (µm) is a thousandth of a millimeter — roughly 1/70th the width of a hair. Coffee runs from about 40 µm (Turkish, nearly powder) to 1,500 µm (cold brew, coarse sea salt). One catch the chart can't do for you: real grounds are never a single size. Every grinder makes a range — some fines, some boulders — and a blade grinder makes a much wider, messier range than a burr grinder. Three grinds, three brews
Espresso that doesn't gush or choke
Espresso lives at Fine, around 180–380 µm — fine table salt. Nine bars of pressure need a tight, even puck; too coarse and the shot gushes sour in 15 seconds, too fine and it chokes and drips bitter. You dial espresso by shot time, not a dial number, and it's the one method that demands near-daily recalibration. Pour over in the medium sweet spot
A V60 wants Medium, roughly 400–950 µm — table salt. Gravity pulls water through an open cone in about three minutes, so the grind just has to hold that drawdown without stalling or racing. Cold brew you can't over-grind toward bitter
Cold brew is Extra Coarse, 900–1,500 µm — coarse sea salt or small peppercorns. Cold water extracts by slow diffusion over 12–24 hours, so big particles and long contact time keep it sweet. What is the best coffee grind size?
There isn't one — it depends entirely on your brew method. What's perfect for espresso (a fine ~180–380 µm) would make pour-over taste like mud, and a French-press coarse grind would make espresso gush sour water. Use your brewing method as the starting point: fine for espresso and Turkish, medium for pour-over and drip, coarse for French press and cold brew. Then dial in by taste. A micron (µm) is one-millionth of a meter. Measuring grind in microns removes the ambiguity of words like "medium," because 700 µm is 700 µm on any grinder while dial numbers mean nothing between machines. How do I know my grind size without a machine to measure it?
Match it to a kitchen texture by feel, which is exactly what the "feels like" column is for. Powdered sugar is Turkish-fine; table salt is espresso-to-pour-over territory; sea salt and coarse sand are French-press coarse; peppercorns are cold-brew coarse. Rub a pinch of grounds between your fingers and compare. It's not laser-precise, but it gets you into the right range fast — and then the cup tells you the rest.
Why does my coffee taste bitter (or sour) at the "right" grind?
Bitter, dry, or muddy means over-extraction — your grind is too fine for the method, so grind coarser. Sour, sharp, weak, or watery means under-extraction — too coarse, so grind finer. A cup can also taste harsh from an uneven grind (a blade grinder making fines and boulders at once), which over- and under-extracts in the same brew. Change one variable at a time and taste again.
Does grind size matter more than the grinder?
They're two halves of the same thing. Grind size sets the average extraction; grind consistency (how tight the particle range is) sets how clean the cup is. A blade grinder can hit the right average size and still taste harsh because it makes a wide, messy range. Grinders that make this chart work
A grind chart is only as good as the grinder hitting it. The picks under your result are matched to the grind you selected, but the principle is the same across the board:
- A burr grinder, not a blade. A blade grinder chops randomly into dust and boulders that over- and under-extract in the same cup. A good burr grinder produces the even grind every row on this chart assumes.
