About Kalita
Kalita was established in Tokyo in 1958 as a pioneer of Japan's home coffee-brewing movement, and the company still frames that as its founding mission: before Kalita's brewing gear reached households, coffee in Japan was largely something you drank out at a coffee shop or restaurant. The company has spent over six decades since then making brewing tools -- drippers, filters, servers, kettles, and grinders -- with a stated design philosophy of "Made in Japan" quality developed with direct feedback from baristas and coffee shops.
Its best-known product is the Kalita Wave, a flat-bottom dripper with three small drainage holes that Kalita introduced in 2010 as an alternative to cone-shaped brewers. Official U.S. distribution has been handled by Washington-based Espresso Parts since 2016, and in 2022 the two companies launched a dedicated Kalita USA storefront to serve the American market directly. In our own testing, the stainless-steel Wave 185 stood out as the most forgiving dripper in the lineup we reviewed, evening out extraction on an imperfect pour without requiring a gooseneck kettle or competition-level technique.
