About Stumptown Coffee Roasters
Stumptown Coffee Roasters was founded in Portland, Oregon in 1999 by Duane Sorenson, whose first cafe opened on Southeast Division Street in a former beauty parlor called "Hair Bender" -- a name the roastery later gave to its signature espresso blend. Stumptown is widely credited as one of the roasters that defined American third-wave coffee, alongside contemporaries like Intelligentsia and Counter Culture, built on the idea that coffee could be treated with the same origin-driven attention as wine. In 2003 the company pioneered a Direct Trade sourcing model, starting with the Aguirre family's Finca El Injerto in Guatemala, a relationship that continues today and is built on quality-based pricing, full transparency with named producers, and multi-year partnerships rather than one-off purchases.
That sourcing discipline scaled with the company: Stumptown now works with dozens of producer partners across four continents, and its 2024 purchases were independently verified by Enveritas against 30 sustainability criteria. Stumptown was named Roaster of the Year by Roast Magazine in 2006 and has repeatedly won "Best of Portland" honors from Willamette Week. Now part of JDE Peet's, the roastery still runs its coffee through a team with more than 120 collective years of roasting experience on Probat machines, including refurbished vintage German-built roasters, and it was an early mover in canned nitro cold brew.
