About Starbucks
Starbucks began in 1971 as a single coffee shop in Seattle's Pike Place Market and grew into the world's best-known coffeehouse brand, while also building a packaged-goods lineup of whole bean, ground, and instant coffee sold well beyond its own stores. Its coffee sourcing runs through C.A.F.E. Practices, launched in 2004 in partnership with Conservation International as one of the coffee industry's first ethical-sourcing verification programs, screening farms against more than 200 indicators covering fair pay, labor conditions, and environmental stewardship.
On the product side, Starbucks' most notable innovation is VIA Ready Brew, launched in 2009 after nearly two decades of development under Don Valencia, the founder of Starbucks' R&D division. VIA blends microground roasted coffee into a soluble base instead of relying purely on dissolved solids, a structural difference from ordinary spray-dried instant that we can confirm in our own cupping: it's one of the only instant product families in our testing with a body and mouthfeel close to brewed coffee.
